Dollar General plans to provide a "comprehensive network" of affordable health services. Residents have a hard time getting medical care in some of the towns where it has stores.

Family Dollar shutters stores in reorganization

As the income gap between rich and poor continues to grow, dollar and 99 cent stores have become increasingly popular in both urban and rural America. Dollar General, one of several discount retail chains, has become one of the fastest growing retailers in the U.S. According to the Institute for Local Self Reliance, there are now over 30,000 dollar stores in the U.S., up from around 18,000 a decade ago. Dollar General and Dollar Tree alone are expected to have 50k stores in the next few years.

Retail discounters flourish as traditional department stores struggle

Off-price retailers have become a bright spot amidst the doom and gloom of widespread closures of brick-and-mortar stores and online shopping’s growing dominance.
A former Macy's store in North Hollywood, California is fenced off from public access. The Laurel Plaza shopping center location closed its doors in October 2016, one of 68 Macy's stores nationwide to close through Spring 2017.
