Estate planning

To keep pets out of shelters after owners die, the ASPCA is urging people to plan ahead. Identify a new guardian. Collect medical records. And yes, if you can afford it, put Splash in your will.

I am a 52-year-old single woman with no children. I have three older siblings and several nieces and nephews, although we are not particularly close (not estranged, just not close). This summer, my goal is to put in place basic end-of-life preparations like a will and a burial plan — possibly long-term-care insurance as well. I learned from my parents' aging and deaths how much help the elderly can need, and how much stress and anxiety that can cause for those who love them. Can you give me some direction before I head to a lawyer? Julia, Omaha, NE

I recall hearing about an intro book to wills and estate planning on one of the podcasts. Can you let me know the title or refer me to a good introductory book? I'm looking to put a will together soon for my new family. Thanks, Stacy, Norwalk, CT

Host Sarah Gardner and MSN's Liz Weston answers your personal finance conundrums.

In what circumstances does it make sense for a couple to buy "second to die" life insurance? Ann, Waukesha, WI

Estate planning isn't simply tax planning or bequest planning. It's also planning for cognitive decline.

I have a niece and nephew in their early 20s who have both recently started their own families. I know they do not have a will, advanced directive or a living trust because they are intimidated by the idea and cost of hiring an attorney to draw up the paperwork. Instead of a gift card this year, I would love to help make sure their assets and children are protected. Is there an easy/affordable product or site online I can use to help get them situated? Jeff, Cincinnati, OH
