"In one case, there was a guy who turned down a full-ride to college to start his own [car] detailing business,” said Te-Ping Chen, a reporter at the Wall Street Journal.

That young man isn’t alone. Many young entrepreneurs, in pursuit of their own version of the ‘American Dream,’ have launched careers in the lucrative car detailing industry.

According to Chen, these mobile car cleaning businesses are making upwards of $19,000 a month. The job isn’t just thorough cleaning. Behind the scenes are viral Instagram accounts, professional classes and instructional material, and luxury clients.

“Marketplace” host Kai Ryssdal spoke with Te-Ping Chen about her article for the Wall Street Journal following young entrepreneurs who are making more than a living cleaning cars.
