While overall divorce rate has been falling in the U.S., older couples are splitting up at higher rates than they used to.

The divorce rate for people over 50 has doubled since 1990. For those over 65, it's tripled, said Emily Stewart, senior correspondent at Business Insider. What makes these separations even more complicated is that older generations have a lot more to split up.

“These people have really kind of built a lifetime together, right?” said Stewart. “It's not just the house, it might be multiple houses, it's probably their retirement accounts, their 401(k)s, and that can be a lot to unwind.”

Stewart joined “Marketplace” host Kai Ryssdal to talk about her reporting.
