Unlocking iPhones spells money, and lots of it

Unlocking smartphones could be a nice money-maker for encryption companies.

The FBI and the Department of Justice have withdrawn their court order compelling Apple to help unlock the iPhone used by one of the San Bernardino shooters. An unnamed third party came forward with a way to get into the phone using a process called NAND Mirroring.

Many people are saying this is a case where the government bluffed, Apple called that bluff, and the government blinked. Whatever the case, it looks like a good time to be in the encryption business. Marketplace Tech host Ben Johnson said there are a lot of smart phones law enforcement wants unlocked.
