Household debt is rising, but still below 2008 levels

Mortgage balances and student loan debt have been on the rise.

Total household debt in the United States increased less than one percent in the final quarter of 2015, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York reported, and is still four percent below the peak reached in the third quarter of 2008, just as the financial crisis hit.
