What congressional uncertainty means for the economy

The race for speaker comes at a time of budget and debt-limit decisions.

The front-runner for the speaker of the House, Republican Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California, has pulled out of the race, raising questions about stability in Congress. This comes ahead of a slew of important economic decisions by lawmakers. Marketplace’s Kimberly Adams explains what the uncertainty in Congress means for the country’s economic health.

It’s a pretty bad timeline coming up. They’re supposed to renew highway funding by the end of the month, then they’re supposed to raise the debt limit by Nov. 5, then there needs to be another budget deal by Dec. 11 because of course Congress only agreed to a short-term fix when we had this big “oh my goodness, there might be a shutdown” situation last week.
