The big data behind Indy Car racing

The need for speed isn't just what gets Formula One race car drivers across the finish line.

The biggest film hitting theaters this weekend is Ron Howard’s “Rush,” a story about Formula One race car drivers in the 1970s. These days if Formula One drivers want to win big, the way to win is with the help of tiny sensors and big data. As important as a race car driver’s skills is the ability of their team to crunch numbers with the help of all kinds of computing. One guy prepping for next weekend’s big Indy Car Grand Prix in Houston is Ron Ruzewski. He’s the technical director for Penske’s Indy Car racing division. Ruzewski says using sensors to collect and analyze data helps Penske work with its drivers.
