Americans don’t think journalists contribute a lot to society

The military topped a survey of occupations in the U.S. that people think "contribute a lot" to society.

This final note today, which I deliver with just a tinge of…wait, what?

The Pew Research Center, as it does from time to time, has asked Americans to rate certain professions by their perceived contribution to society.

The top five, in order, were the military, teachers, doctors, scientists and engineers. They, in fact, were the only jobs rated as “contributing a lot to society” by more than half of Americans.

Journalists — and the source of my “wait, what?” — came in at 28 percent.

Hey, at least we beat the lawyers.
