2014 Winter Olympics start stockpiling snow

A ski resort in Sochi, Russia — site of the 2014 Winter Olympics — is worried about having enough snow on the ground when the games begin in February.

This final note today, in which we fast-forward to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. It’s yet another example that hosting the Olympics can be more trouble than they’re worth.

The warm winter in Sochi has organizers worried about having enough snow on the ground when the games begin in February of next year.

So the ski resort that’s going to host the downhill skiing events is going to store 450,000 cubic meters of snow up at altitude. Even allowing for melting, they figure they’ll have more than half of it left.

All told, $11 million. For snow.
