Mountain Lion downloaded 3 million times in four days

Hey, this company called Apple? You might want to keep an eye on it. Seems to be doing a few things right. Mountain Lion, the new operating system for Mac, has been downloaded three million times in the first four days of its release, making it, in Apple’s words, the “most successful OS X release in Apple’s history.” It’s available for $19.99 as a download from Apple’s site. That low price and ease of access (no purchase of CDs required) likely contributed to the high sales figures, as did the general sense among Apple Nation to have the latest and greatest thing, whether that be the new iPhone or Mountain Lion, even though Mountain Lion, while supposedly pretty good, is nothing all that revolutionary.

Here’s what’s extra nuts: the number of machines running Mountain Lion may be much higher since all sales and downloads are calculated to an Apple ID, so if you have multiple machines on one ID, only one is factored into that three million number.
