What a difference capital letters make, huh? If I told you Apple had released a mountain lion, well, that’s kind of scary. Mountain Lion, with caps, is the new operating system for Mac and it comes out today to attack computers with its big claws of usability and its sharp teeth of features. If you have a reasonably up to date Mac, you can download it. What’s interesting here is the path toward a unified operating system covering both mobile and desktop for Mac.

The BBC notes that many of the new features in Mountain Lion have been proven for some time on iPhones, iPads, and iPods Touch:

These include the ability to upload and synchronise material with its iCloud internet storage service; the introduction of the iMessage service allowing text message-like chats between the firm’s computers and handsets; the ability to easily share material to Twitter; and an application to compare the user’s video game scores against those of their friends.

We already know that Microsoft is gearing up for much the same thing with Windows 8: an operating system for the desktop that’s inspired by mobile. If you don’t take this as a clear indicator that mobile IS WHAT WILL MATTER IN THE FUTURE, then there’s simply nothing I can do for you.
