New Office for Microsoft

That’s Office, capitalized, like a title. Microsoft debuted its new version of the Office suite of software yesterday. It’s hard to get really super headbangingly stoked over the new Excel but we saw a lot of enabling of touchscreen technology so that Office can work on the new Surface tablets that Microsoft really hopes someone buys. Office will come preinstalled on those things, whenever they finally come out.
On our program today, we talk about Microsoft is heading toward a subscription model with Office. CEO Steve Ballmer said that the suite was more of a service than an application. Gone are the days when you installed these things on a computer and left it at that. Now you’ll get Office wherever you want it, the software hooking up to the cloud for storage, and you’ll pay a monthly bill for the pleasure. Kind of like what Google offers. Google, of course, is the competitor in business and personal productivity offerings that is threatening Microsoft at this point so it’s kind of a head ‘em off at the pass maneuver.
