The future is at the bridge of your nose

Ultrabooks? Seven inch vs. 10 inch tablets? Who cares? The horizon of the future is tucked nicely behind wearable computers. Google is already making a splash with Project Glass, offering developers a first crack to buy and use the glasses next year. Now Apple and Olympus are getting into the game.

Olympus announced yesterday that it has plans to introduce a pair of glasses called the MEG 4.0. The glasses will be more of a personalized screen than actual computer. The glasses will connect via Bluetooth to your smartphone, which is where all the actual computing will get done.

The New York Times reports that, Apple was “awarded a patent for a ‘Peripheral treatment for head-mounted displays’ that can be used to project an image into someone’s eye.” There’s a drawing accompanying the Apple patent that shows what looks like a set of ski goggles affixed with an apparatus you might find in an ophthalmologist’s office.

So this thing projects directly into YOUR EYE?! Mother always told me not to sit too close to the TV (even though she made it my full-time babysitter by age 4). I’m sure she will not approve.
