Facebook offers same-sex wedding icons

Okay, so the story is that Big Face now offers little icons of two women or of two men that can be employed when a user wants to denote having gotten married. An icon of a man and a woman was already available. The move is getting a lot of attention but I think it’s kind of interesting in how technology is now reflecting society. You can see Facebook’s move here as a political statement in support of the rights of two people to marry, regardless of gender, or you could see it as a simple design move that reflects society. After all, same-sex marriage is legal in many states, including New York, and a whole lot of countries around the world. Praise or vilify Facebook if you want but this decision is also just a recognition of reality.
