Tablet “critical mass” reached

Hey, as long as we’re looking at numbers, this new one from research firm ComScore is calling out for some interpretation. Apparently if you already own a smartphone, you’re much more likely to own a tablet computer as well. So it’s not an either/or proposition.

From CNET:

Tablet use among smartphone owners has more than doubled in the past year, going from 9.7 percent last year to 23.6 percent this year, ComScore found. By comparison, only 10.4 percent of feature phone owners also use a tablet, “suggesting that smartphone ownership is highly predictive of tablet adoption in the current market,” comScore said.

It should be noted also that while there are now over 200 types of tablets on the market, the iPad is still flat crushing all others by a ludicrous degree. It has a 65% market share by last count, while the lower-priced Kindle Fire seems to be fading fast.

This means, of course, that Apple stands to grow yet more powerful, consuming all matter and light and energy in its path, becoming a sort of technological black hole but with sleeker, more rounded edges.
