Hacking Hotmail

This is a Marketplace.org Reader

Hacking Hotmail just got harder.  But it was really, really easy.

Ars Techinca reports that Microsoft has repaired a problem with Hotmail that “allowed anyone to reset the password of any Hotmail account.” Anyone could reset ANY account password. And not just super-smart guys who sit in dark basements and infiltrate government sites. We’re talking anyone, anyone. “Initially hackers were offering to crack accounts for $20 a throw. However, the technique became publicly known and started to spread rapidly with Web and YouTube tutorials showing the technique popping up across the Arabic-speaking Internet. Videos showing the technique (or at least, something close to it) can be found as far back as April 6th.”

But now its fixed. No biggie.
