Google is back in the retail phone biz

This is a Marketplace.org Reader

Ah 2010. British singing sensation Susan Boyle shocked us all with an angelic voice. Toy Story 3 topped the box office. We tuned in to shows like American Idol and Dancing With The Stars. And Google tried to sell phones directly from its website. Well, good news nostalgia fans! 2010 is back!

Google has added the Galaxy Nexus to the Play section of its site and you can buy it for $399 unlocked. It will work on AT&T or T-Mobile but not Verizon or Sprint. It runs on Ice Cream Sandwich, the latest Android operating system, one of few phones so far to do so. Google’s previous foray into selling phones was a flop but that was before the Play section, which might change things. Thus far, all of Google’s attempts to become a retailer have resulted in a big pile of failure and tears and sorrow. Good luck, Google!
