Hello Larry Page, Eric Schmidt, and James Cameron – a new breed of space explorer. Cameron, having just returned from his one-man sub expedition to the bottom of the sea, has decided to give space a shot. With the help of the two Google execs, comes the announcement of a new company called Planetary Resources. Its goal, it seems, will be to explore the cosmos looking for natural resources we earthlings can use. This dream (of Jeannie) team will be formally announcing its mission tomorrow. Page, Schmidt, and Cameron (aka Major Anthony Nelson, Major Roger Healey, and Dr. Bellows) won’t be the only ones manning the ship.
Planetary Resource was co-founded by Eric Anderson, a former NASA Mars mission manager, and Peter Diamandis, the commercial space entrepreneur behind the X-Prize, a competition that offered $10 million to a group that launched a reusable manned spacecraft. Other notable investors include Charles Simonyi, a former top executive at Microsoft, and K. Ram Shriram, a Google director.
