Apple unlocking iPhones

This is a Marketplace.org Reader

If you have an iPhone through AT&T and your contract is up, you can now get it unlocked from the carrier so you can put it on a different plan or sign up for something like international roaming. Apple announced this option on Friday and started officially providing the service on Sunday. The unlocking is all being done by Apple itself and can be done pretty quickly either in an AT&T store or over a web chat. All you need is the ID number on the device.

Says The Next Web:

Once you’ve completed the procedure, Apple pushes the unlock code during the next 72 hours to your email address, so the code comes from the mothership, not from AT&T. Once Apple completes the unlock request, a customer has to back-up and restore and tether the device to iTunes to complete the unlock process. This process is detailed in an Apple support document that was referenced by the AT&T representative we talked to.
