More available spectrum found! (“It was under the couch!” says stunned FCC )

The National Telecommunications and Information Administration announced yesterday that it will be able to repurpose 95MHz of the broadcast spectrum for wireless coverage. It’s a part of the spectrum that is currently set aside for a lot of government use that could be accommodated elsewhere, apparently. The government agency said that actually freeing up that space could take many years and a ton of money and there are some concerns that it could end up costing more to free it up than it would bring in through an auction to wireless carriers. One solution being floated is to have government agencies and wireless providers share the space. You stopped reading this memo item round about the time I mentioned 95MHz.
