Apple offers refunds to Aussie iPad customers

This is a Marketplace.org Reader

So the new iPad went on sale in Australia and customers soon noticed that although the data network-enabled version said “Wi-Fi + 4G”, the device wouldn’t connect to 4G networks down under. That’s because there are two 4Gs. The United States and Canada use a 4G LTE standard while Australia and other countries use a 4G WiMax standard. I could break down all the differences here but know this: WiMax is faster.

At first, Apple planned to change the product description and advertising for the iPad in Australia but now the company says screw it, we’ll just give you a refund if you’re going to cry about it. Apple would rather lose every sale than back off the 4G claim. Thing is, modern LTE and WiMax networks are really just placeholders for longer term networks that are being built and will be much faster than the current offerings.
