Does the new iPad need to join Overheaters Anonymous?

Okay, here’s a story that we’re going to be hearing about constantly in the next few weeks OR we’ll never hear about it again. Which will it be? I’M NO PSYCHIC. Sorry. But there are reports that the new iPad is heating up to temperatures way hotter than it ought to be. Any device will get warm after you use it for a while but CNET points to several reports saying that the iPad can get so hot, especially in one corner, that the device will actually shut down and display a message saying that it needs to cool down. Like we all do, sometimes.

Also, analysts at IHS iSuppli say that even though the new iPad costs the same as the old iPad, it costs 30% more for Apple to make it.

From the Register:

The new “retina” display, for instance, is $30 more than the iPad 2’s $57 screen, iSuppli reckons. Likewise, the A5X costs $23, whereas the old A5 comes in at $14.20. The new camera, at $12.35, is $8.25 more expensive than its predecessor.

This is all being figured out because as soon as the first iPads hit the streets, some people start tearing them apart to see what’s inside them. Poor iPads. You think you’re headed for a life of utility and affection but then out come the dismantling tools.
