Google slays the Android store, invites you to Play

This is a Marketplace.org Reader

Perhaps Google wanted to get some press before today’s big Apple announcement, or perhaps it was a way to try to go unnoticed while everybody paid attention to the big Apple announcement. Either way, it closed the curtains on its Android Market yesterday. The apps previously in the shop, along with Google Music titles, Google Books, and Google Video (huh?) can now be found in under the new moniker: Google Play. The emphasis is on full-time connectivity between Android devices and your computer, so if you’re reading a book on, say, your phone, you can pick up where you left off on your laptop. The whole things looks and feels a lot more like the iTunes one-stop shop model, and in a weird way, it falls in line with Google’s other service consolidations. Now the  Biz Markie on Play will get dumped into the same data bucket as your YouTube perusals and Blogger reads. Ah, progress.
