We’ve talked at length about the Square system for mobile payments. It’s an app plus a little doohickey that you put on your smartphone and then you can read credit cards and take payments for things like political donations or the hemp bracelets that you sell at the street fair. Other stuff too, probably. And while those markets are nice, they aren’t exactly stores.
Now there’s a new product from Square that is exactly for stores.

Like the company’s less meaty existing iPad app, Register works both with the Square Card Reader — a card swiper that plugs into the iPad’s headphone jack — and with Card Case, a mobile-wallet app for the iPhone and Android handsets that lets you pay at Square-equipped retailers without even removing your phone from your pocket.

It also lets you pay with, get this, cash! Remember cash?

It’s brand new but if it really works, this could be a much cheaper and more versatile option for stores since they can just buy an iPad instead of a full-on cash register.

As with other Square products, the company takes a 2.75% processing fee, the app and reader are free.
