A ton of new phones from ZTE. Who? Exactly!

This is a Marketplace.org Reader

The Mobile World Congress is under way in Barcelona and phones are dropping out of the sky. Figuratively! A company you don’t hear much about is ZTE but they’re making a big splash this year with a eight new phones. ZTE is a Chinese company that’s looking to break into the high end side of the smartphone market. Seven of the new phones run on Android and one runs on Windows.

The Verge breaks down the specs:

The N91 and the PF200 are both coming with LTE support; the N91 with a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 4.3-inch WVGA screen, and 5-megapixel camera; and the PF200 with a 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm processor, 4.3-inch QHD screen, 8-megapixel camera, and 1GB of RAM. Both will launch with Android 4.0. The PF112 HD is a straight HSPA Android 4.0 smartphohne with a 4.5-inch 720p screen, 8-megapixel camera, and 8GB of storage with 1GB of RAM. Lastly, the Orbit (running on Windows) features 4GB of storage and a 5-megapixel camera and will be available in Q2 2012.

I include this item because a new player in the competitive smartphone market is interesting, especially at a time when some of the current companies are struggling to keep afloat (looking at you, Nokia). Also, it’s interesting to see ZTE place its bets: seven Androids, one Windows.

After passing through the Mobile World Congress, all phones must be approved by the Mobile World President and are subject to review by the Mobile World Supreme Court.
