A new report from Nielsen says iPhone sales were way up in the last quarter and that Apple’s share of the smartphone market soared along with them. 44.5% of new smartphone buyers went with iPhone compared to 25.1% doing the same in October. This reflects the positive word-of-mouth on the iPhone 4S which was introduced in early October. And it appears that Apple’s gains were mirrored by Android taking a hit, according to CNN:

Android’s lead among recent buyers nearly evaporated in the space of two months; in the December survey, 46.9% said they purchased a phone running Google’s (GOOG) operating system, down from 61.6% before the iPhone 4S’ Oct. 14 launch. Among all smartphone owners, Android still leads iPhone 43.6% to 30%.
