Cardinal bios on Wikipedia

THE source for religious history

A new batch of Cardinals were recently named by the Vatican, and with these new appointments come official biographies. So it was weird when the 22 new biographies that were released to journalists over the weekend turned out to be cribbed straight out of Wikipedia. As the Guardian writes, the biographies, “were cut and pasted from Wikipedia’s Italian language site without attribution, but questions were asked when many of the archbishops in line for promotion were described as Catholic – a statement recalling the frequently asked question: ‘Is the Pope a Catholic?’” A Vatican spokesman assured the press that the biographies were “unofficial” and “the decision to use Wikipedia was a temporary measure driven by haste.”
