A new anti-piracy bill is being introduced in congress today as an alternative to the Stop Online Piracy Act, says CNET’s Declan McCulloch.

SOPA has received a lot of criticism since it was first introduced a few weeks ago. Free speech advocates didn’t like how the anti-piracy bill would lead to the take down of a lot of legal content and they also didn’t like how law enforcement didn’t even need a warrant to shut a site down. Meanwhile, tech companies like Google, Facebook, Microsoft, and various internet service providers didn’t like that they’d be suddenly asked to be cops hunting down suspected pirates.

The OPEN Act will reportedly be introduced by Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) and Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) so you have bipartisan and bicameral. McCulloch reports that people will be able to view the bill and suggest edits to it at KeepTheWebOpen.com although when I went there it was password protected and I couldn’t get it. Cue the sad trombone.
