There’s a story floating around the wires about a typewriter factory in India closing its doors forever, thus ending the era of the typewriter. Godrej & Boyce actually stopped making typewriters in 2009 and has been selling leftover inventory ever since but now they’re shutting the doors. But fear not, clack clack ding enthusiasts. The typewriter is not dead yet, it’s merely been sent to prison. An American company called Swintec says it’s running plenty of operations in Asia to build new typewriters for use in American prisons. The new typewriters have clear plastic bodies so no contraband can be hidden in them. Weird! But makes sense! Still, this article points out that those prisons too are beginning to drift toward a very controlled and monitored email program.
