I oversee the “Marketplace Morning Report” and our international cast co-produced by the BBC in London.
What was your first job?
Outreach youth leader for an independent skills program for the foster care system.
What do you think is the hardest part of your job that no one knows?
I'm a night owl, so waking up at 3:30 a.m. Pacific Time every morning ... and having team members in Los Angeles, New York and London.
What advice do you wish someone had given you before you started this career?
Travel as much as you can ... knowing as much as you can about the world and the various perspectives and experiences of its inhabitants will make you more empathetic and a better journalist and storyteller.
In your next life, what would your career be?
I'd choose journalism all over again ... :)
Fill in the blank: Money can’t buy you happiness, but it can buy you ______.
Red Vines, plane tickets, music and Jordans (shoes).
What is something that everyone should own, no matter how much it costs?
Pencils to rewind old cassette tapes.
What’s something that you thought you knew but later found out you were wrong about?
I loved space as a kid, and I assumed that by now technology would have propelled us into every Space Age fantasy “The Jetsons” espoused ... by now we should be driving aerocars, flying around on jet packs, living in houses in the sky and working a three-hour, three-day workweek. Oh, and where is my robot maid?
What’s your most memorable Marketplace moment?
Donning a super nerdy white protective suit and goggles to report from the old Victorian sewers in London that were built in the 1800s for a special series we did with the BBC in 2014. The sewers didn't smell as bad as I thought; and I was shocked at the number of spoons and wedding/engagement rings at the bottom of the sewers.
What’s the favorite item in your workspace and why?
My retro Tewell speaker ... it's a radio producer's dream. It has an old-school look but impeccable sound (amazing bass!). I use it in my office to listen to our broadcasts and to preview our reporter and host radio pieces.
