German mechanics total a rare Mercedes-Benz 300 CL

A 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Coupe.

This final note today. A couple of guys -- by which I mean idiots -- over in Germany took a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL for a test drive the other day. That's the classic mid-1950s version with the gull wing doors. Best car ever, if you ask me.

These guys were mechanics, just finished restoring the thing, and then rolled it off the side of the road. Damage came to a staggering $830,000.

The police report says the 80-kilometer-per-hour speed limit (55 miles an hour or so) was not observed.

Gee, ya think?
