With yet another wave of layoffs recently, a lot of workers are understandably on edge. It’s hard not to spiral into all the what ifs: What if the next paycheck is my last? What if I’m next?

On this week’s episode, host Reema Khrais explores how to cope with that uncertainty, and what proactive steps we can take to protect ourselves. She speaks with psychologist Ellen Hendriksen, executive coach Melody Wilding, and financial educator Jannese Torres who share actionable ways to stay grounded and prepare for the worst – emotionally, professionally, and financially.

So how do you cope with layoff anxiety? Here are some takeaways:

  • Anxiety isn’t the enemy: In fact, it’s there to protect you. It becomes a problem when it starts running your life, doing more harm than good.

  • Build a life beyond your job: Cultivate what psychologists call self-complexity, a sense of identity that stretches beyond work.

  • Make your value visible: Identify your company’s top priorities, align your work with them and communicate the impact you’re making.

  • Get your finances layoff-ready: If you think layoffs are coming, maximize savings, prioritize debts, contact lenders and research benefits you’re eligible for.

  • And most importantly, don’t beat yourself up if you get laid off.
