That’s the story of Washington this past week. Case in point: top automakers, represented by the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, have asked President-elect Trump to review standards for cars’ fuel economy and emissions regulations, which were center points of President Barack Obama’s policies. Regulators are currently assessing the standards, which are poised to get stricter in coming years, as part of a midpoint review of the program that established them. Automakers say conforming to stricter standards will be costly, and consumers don’t want to pay more for vehicles. Environmentalists want the standards left intact, saying they are cutting pollution and reducing our dependence on oil.
