Behind the Data: Commute time by income bracket

The census asks people how long their commute to work is and then divides it into six different categories: no commute, a commute of 15 minutes or less, 16-30 minutes, 31-45 minutes, 46-60 minutes or commute times of more than an hour.

We compiled our data based on additional research from Steven Ruggles, J. Trent Alexander, Katie Genadek, Ronald Goeken, Matthew B. Schroeder, and Matthew Sobek using census data.
