It’s estimated over 70 percent of Americans will be watching some kind of fireworks show tonight. And the displays are getting more impressive thanks to new technologies, like computerized electronic matches and synchronized music systems.

New York’s massive Macy’s Fireworks display over the Hudson River has been curated in part by R&B artist Usher this year. He even got a special new firework named after him.

Ahead of the bombast, Marketplace Tech host Ben Johnson went to a highly guarded pier in Staten Island, where 30-year veteran and family businessman Gary Souza was overseeing prep for one of the country’s biggest displays. Click on the audio player above to hear their conversation.
