Androids are taking over the world

John Moe Aug 9, 2012

I knew it! Applying tinfoil hat now! Oh, the phones? Android PHONES? Uh… well… that’s where it STARTS!

As rumors of the impending arrival of El Cinco, the iPhone 5, begin to swirl into a tornado, it’s important to occasionally note that Apple is having its butt handed to it by the Android platform in terms of overall market share.

From the AP:

Samsung Electronics Co. and other phone makers shipped nearly 105 million Android smartphones in the April-June quarter, giving Android 68 percent of the worldwide market, up from 47 percent last year.

Now, a couple things also need to be pointed out here. One, there hasn’t been a new iPhone in going on a year now and there will be one, probably, in early September (good luck, Brancaccio!). Also, there’s only one new iPhone at a time whereas Android, an open and free platform that anyone can build on, is part of all sorts of different devices being pumped out constantly.
Apple’s market share dipped a little but it still shipped more phones than last year.

In fact, it wasn’t Apple that got hurt the most by the Android uprising:

The gains came largely at the expense of BlackBerry phones made by Research in Motion Ltd. and Symbian phones made largely by Nokia Corp. Each saw its market share drop below 5 percent.
