Dept. of Wait What Now? : Amazon is now a game company

John Moe Aug 7, 2012

Amazon.com has announced the existence of Amazon Game Studios and launched its first social game on Facebook. So I guess now Amazon is Zynga as well as still being Amazon. The Facebook game is called Living Classics and it follows a family of foxes as they run around classic literature worlds like Alice In Wonderland. So I guess you get a tie-in there to good old-fashioned books (you know, those things that Amazon was originally known for). That might be a reason why this is happening since almost everything Amazon-related ends up pointed at driving retail sales. Amazon has to know that it’s hard to make money off of Facebook games, right? I’d think so.

As for the game studio, the Seattle Times says:

Amazon gave few details about the new division except that it’s focused on developing “innovative, fun and well-crafted games,” a sign that more titles are on the way. It also noted that the team is hiring.
