Nokia slashes Lumia 900 to $50

We could easily headline this post: “Nokia announces philosophical conundrum”. By many accounts, the Lumia 900 is a perfectly serviceable smartphone. A good one, even. And it runs the Windows Phone platform, which has plenty of fans. And if you’re in the market for a new phone. hey, why NOT save yourself $150 or more and pick up the thing?

Except it’s not the iPhone. And it’s not even an Android. It’s more like when you’re a kid and you want your mom to buy you Levi’s jeans and she comes back with Lorvi’s instead and no one at school wears those and she says, “They’re just as good and they were a lot cheaper!” Oh mom. How could you?

Nokia, king of the handset phones, for whatever that’s worth, was way late to smartphones and partnered with fellow late arrival Microsoft in building a phone no one seems to want.

The BBC makes me love them with this:

A spokesman for Nokia denied it was acting out of desperation and said the price cut was “not unusual” at this point in a smartphone’s life. He said the cut formed part of its “normal strategy” for handsets.
