Municipal pools opened in New York City this week — beaches and pools in other parts of the country have been open for a while.

And yet, many of them are facing a critical problem: lifeguard shortages.

From Tulsa to Minneapolis, cities are having a hard time finding enough people to work summer lifeguard jobs.

To see where this shortage is coming from, we turn to Connie Harvey for today’s Mid-day Extra. She works in the aquatics program for the American Red Cross.

We’re here to help you navigate this changed world and economy.

Our mission at Marketplace is to raise the economic intelligence of the country. It’s a tough task, but it’s never been more important.

In the past year, we’ve seen record unemployment, stimulus bills, and reddit users influencing the stock market. Marketplace helps you understand it all, will fact-based, approachable, and unbiased reporting.
