Find Friends Nearby feature on Facebook

John Moe Jun 25, 2012

Because what if a moment were to pass where you DIDN’T know where your friends were physically located? OH NO, I’M SORRY TO MAKE YOU EVEN IMAGINE SUCH A HELLSCAPE! Worry no more, my hyper-connected Friend, now Facebook lets you know where everyone is, at least among people who want you to know where they are. The new Find Friends Nearby feature is currently available on mobile and isn’t limited to just the people you’ve already Friended:

You can see both your own friends, as well as those you may not know.
For now it looks like the main purpose is to quickly add people who you meet at a specific event — like a hackathon, or a bar.
As Pincombe points out, “Before, you would need to tell them your name, probably spell it for them, and then depending on how common your name is, you’d have to tell them which of the results is actually you.  This makes it 2 taps if you save a bookmark.”

There’s a lot happening in the world.  Through it all, Marketplace is here for you.

You rely on Marketplace to break down the world’s events and tell you how it affects you in a fact-based, approachable way. We rely on your financial support to keep making that possible.

Your donation today powers the independent journalism that you rely on. For just $5/month, you can help sustain Marketplace so we can keep reporting on the things that matter to you.
