All of a sudden, the UN’s International Telecommunications Union is making all kinds of news

John Moe May 29, 2012

The House of Representatives will look into a plan to let the UN have more control over Internet In a related story, Apple will look into a plan to carve my face into the back of every iPhone it sells. Both plans have about the same chance of being approved. China and Russia are among the nations supporting a plan to give more power to the United Nations’ International Telecommunications Union (ITU). The idea isn’t getting much support in Congress because it would involve the US having less power and because, as Florida Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) says, China and Russia are “not exactly bastions of Internet freedom.”

In a move that will likely make people a lot happier, we’re all going to have REALLY GREAT TELEVISIONS. The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) has agreed to new recommendations for Ultra High Definition Television of 3840 x 2160 and 7680 x 4320.

Slash Gear says both resolutions will be called Ultra High Definition Television. Because that’s not confusing at all:

The lower resolution standard will come first, and then the high-resolution will be implemented in the future both under the same name. This is similar to what we have today with HDTV, including both 720p and 1080p resolutions. The resolutions will be called 4K and 8K. The 4K standard will have a resolution of eight-megapixels with the 8K version getting 32-megapixels.
