Summer blockbusters: Separating winners from losers

It seems like we live in an age where, when big budget summer movies do well, they do really well; And when they crash and burn, well… Remember “John Carter?”

This past weekend, “Battleship” failed to meet expectations while” The Avengers” managed to keep raking in the cash.

But at a bare minimum, these two movies — and many other summer blockbusters over the years — share many of the same traits: big stars; big explosions. Why does one succeed when the other fails?
