With another new CEO, what’s the future of Yahoo?

Jeremy Hobson: Now to Silicon Valley, where for the third time in three years, the CEO of Yahoo is stepping down. Scott Thompson resigned over the weekend; he reportedly told the board he has thyroid cancer, though he had also been under fire for having a phony computer science degree on his resume.

Marketplace’s Gregory Warner has more on what this means for the future of one of the most visited sites on the web.

Gregory Warner: It’s not just switching the nameplate. With each new CEO, Yahoo’s looked into the mirror and tried to be a different company.

Richard Holway: They’ve tried to compete with all the big boys in the race, and they just didn’t have what it took.

Richard Holway is the chairman for Tech Market View a technology research firm in the U.K. But don’t call Yahoo a little guy yet — not with 700 million users.

Henry Blodget: There are almost no other sites in the world that have that sort of audience. And there are certainly no traditional media companies that have that sort of audience.

That’s Henry Blodget of Business Insider. He says that the interim CEO Ross Levinsohn is a better fit with a background most recently at Fox in digital media and maybe more importantly, online advertising.

Blodget: So hopefully Yahoo finally has a CEO whose background meshes with what Yahoo actually is.

Is, and will be?

I’m Gregory Warner for Marketplace.
