In the patent court version of an overtime tie or taking your aunt to the prom, Oracle’s lawsuit against Google for patent infringement has led to a mixed verdict. It comes up pretty short in the whole “rocking all you thought you knew to the ground” department. A court in San Francisco ruled that Google did infringe on the general structure of copyrights owned by Oracle but the court did not find that Google had violated copyrights related to Java. That last bit was the part everyone was keeping an eye on because it means that Google won’t have to make huge changes to the Android operating system it created and which has, you know, caught on.

And according to the New York Times, it ain’t over yet for Googs:

With only a partial win, Google is expected to continue to fight, said Al Hilwa, an analyst with IDC. “There are going to be appeals,” he said. “It looks like Google is close to what it wants, with just one copyright loss. If they have to get a license, all the Android phone vendors have to get one, too. It could give Oracle a say in future versions of Android, and that is something Google doesn’t want.”
