Ivy Bridge processors debut

John Moe Apr 23, 2012

Sometimes you need to eat your Tech Report vegetables. And I know that a story on a new sort of processor premiering today is not as sweet and delicious as a new iPhone or a new way to watch movies or some crazy robot story. I get that! But stories about the Ivy Bridge processor from Intel will make your brain grow big and strong.
Intel has 20 versions of Ivy Bridge out today, mostly for desktop computers although more versions will come out soon for smaller devices.
Here’s what you need to know:

– These things are 22 nanometers thick. NANOmeters, as in a billionth of a meter. 4000 of them could fit across a human hair. Intel plans to have them at 10 nanometers by 2015.
– They use 20% less power and are 20% faster than the industry standard, meaning everything will run faster and drain your battery slower and use fewer resources.
– They’re in 3D! Flat processors tend to leak power, which hurts battery life. Ivy Bridge wraps itself in gates to retain more power and presto, better battery life.

So when a new line of machines emerges in the coming months and they’re all kinds of awesome, now you will know why because you ATE YOUR VEGETABLES.
