A new app called Wallit lets iPhone users leave virtual messages on the walls of destination spots like the Eiffel Tower, Yankee Stadium, and the Golden Gate Bridge. The app uses augmented reality, so if you point your phone at a Starbucks, for example, you would see notes that other people have posted to the wall. If you’re at Starbucks, the notes will most likely be some version of this: “Don’t bother trying the bathroom door. There’s a guy in there taking a sink shower. He should be done in five, but you’re gonna want to give it a day to ‘clear out.’”
Speaking of Starbucks, Reuters spoke to Wallit creator, Veysel Berk, who says, “There are 15,000 Starbucks locations all over the world. We are creating walls in each of these locations. If Starbucks claims and wants to customize these virtual walls we are going to allow them by subscription. They are going to be able to customize their logo, collect user feedback and deliver content to these walls”
Augmented reality at Yankee Stadium might be cute, but this is the kind of tech that, if it isn’t already, should be used in some serious spy business. Coded messages left at GPS coordinates from one spy to another. Q, can you hear me?
