Chevy Volt named European Car of the Year

Bit of an odd time for GM lately as the Chevy Volt is beginning to resemble a lesser Woody Allen movie: critically revered, praised in Europe, kind of a dud at the domestic box office. The Volt has been named European Car of the Year. It’s an award given in advance of the upcoming Geneva Motor Show and is intended to spotlight a car that signals the future of cars.

But that news comes only a few days after GM halted production of the Volt for what it says will be five weeks. Seems the car isn’t a hot seller. Even though it gets a ridiculous 94 miles per gallon, it’s also priced north of 40 grand. Then there was the concern that it would burst into flames, that freaked people out for a while. GM is sitting on what it says is a 154-day supply of the cars so it wants to let demand catch up with supply.
