Nokia not dead yet, will go for a walk, says CEO
Nokia CEO Stephen Elop (I can never see his name without thinking that it’s “pole” spelled backwards) had his big moment on stage at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona today and spelled out why his company is due to create big awesome things and return to its status as rock star phone maker of the world. He called out the Android platform as being too fragmented, too many companies selling too many products of such varying quality that customers can’t navigate what’s good and what’s lousy any more. Into that turbulence, then, sails Nokia with Windows Phones.
Nokia faces significant challenges. The world’s largest handset manufacturer took a hit with its brand and the perception that it can still deliver a quality phone. It has designs on big markets such as the U.S., where it has traditionally struggled. It also faces entrenched competitors in Apple and a slew of Android vendors.
Nokia recently reported that it had sold 1 million Lumia smartphones since its launch, a number some worried represented a slow start for the company. But Elop warned against comparing its early performance with that of an established platform like Android.
