Mid-day Extra: Drew Brees breaks an NFL record

Adriene Hill Dec 27, 2011

It was a big weekend for sports. Notably, the NBA started its much delayed season.

But in football, a big record was broken. Quarterback Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints is now the NFL’s record-holder for the most yards passing in a single season.

Last night in the Saints win against the Atlanta Falcons, he beat Dan Marino’s old record set back in 1984.

In today’s Mid-day Extra, we talk about broken sports records, and what they mean for sports and for professional athletes.

While the streets of New Orleans were still quite after the night’s festivities, we caught up with Jeff Duncan, a columnist for the
New Orleans Times-Picayune.

He pointed out that breaking a record today is a much bigger deal that it was 27 years ago, because of the exponential growth of the NFL since then. That can translate directly into dollars for the man himself, but more importantly, for the Saints, and for the city of New Orleans.
